Sonia Gandhi cancer rumors turn out to be true, Rahul in charge in her absence. A report in a leading Indian daily has said that Sonia Gandhi has been diagnosed with cervical cancer, a very common disease among the Indian women.
Sonia Gandhi was operated upon at Memorial Sloan—Kettering Cancer Center. But so far Congress leadership has remained silent on the nature of the disease or for how long she has been afflicted with the problem.
Meanwhile Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi is to lead the ruling Congress party in India in absence of his mother Sonia Gandhi. Mrs. Sonia has flied to the U.S. for a surgery for an undisclosed disease.
Until she comes back after the treatment, the media-shy Gandhi, who always rejected to be a part of the ruling machine even being a member of the Indian Parliament, will take control of the Congress party.
Mr. Gandhi has recently grabbed large media attention after his controversial campaigns for the poor people of India. Gandhi visited several rural areas of India on foot and motorbike to meet its deprived folks. His move was largely criticized by several political and social analysts.
Rahul Gandhi, who is 41-year-old, is largely touted to be the future key player of Indian politics, the role his mother is doing now as the President of the Congress party. Since its independence in 1947, the role of Gandhi families in Indian politics has been dominating.
Rahul’s father Rajiv Gandhi was the former Prime Minister of India. However, his mother famously turned down the offer to become the PM when the Congress-party led coalition United Progress Alliance came into the power in 2004 under her caretaking.
There are talks that the 64-year-old Sonia will come back to India to take some rest from the active politics. That means it will be the beginning of Rahul’s active political life in India.
Meanwhile, Congress has not exposed anything about the illness of Sonia. The party’s general secretary recently stated referring to the doctor that she underwent a successful surgery.
